The Company

Figure 8 Rescue is a startup manufacturing company focused on bringing our new patent pending Positive Pressure Infant Rescue Device to the market. The name Figure 8 Rescue was derived from an important design element used in the construction of this device, and pays tribute to the figure 8 knot, one of the most common knots  used in the fire service.

Figure 8 Rescue has designed a device to move and protect infants and toddlers from heat, flame, toxic gases, and other hazards encountered while being rescued during structural fire emergencies. This product completely encapsulates the infant or toddler, securing them in an easy to transport heat protective enclosure, while maintaining safe breathing air using a positive pressure air supply.

The Product

Imagine a duffle bag, made of the same heat and flame resistant material used in firefighter turnout gear, supplied with a compressed air source. This design was developed to give firefighters and rescuers a way to safely move a victim through dangerous environments found during structure fire emergencies. It is also ideal for situational uses where protecting and moving a victim from other types of hazardous areas or atmospheres is required. These situations could include lowering from a rooftop or window, or lifting from a trench or well. The structural materials and internal padding of the device provides moderate protection to the victim from hazards such as light falling debris, and can prevent injury from harmful or sharp objects such as glass. This device will significantly aid firefighter mobility and safety, by freeing their hands for other necessary tasks, which allows them to perform a safe navigation and exit of a structure.

When outside of a hazardous atmosphere, the design of the device will also allow for a user to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when needed. Under these circumstances the bag may be positioned, with the victim inside, in front of the user. The bag is designed to allow quick and easy access for full patient contact. The shoulder strap may be adjusted, allowing for the bag to be positioned at the chest level of the user. The advantage of this method is that it allows for proper positioning to perform CPR, yet enables them to momentarily pause CPR to accomplish tasks such as opening doors, quickly removing debris blocking an exit, or navigating stairways or other obstacles.

Our product was designed to prevent injury, burns, or death to infants and toddlers. Beyond this obvious goal, our product has the potential to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical costs by preventing these injuries with each successful rescue performed.  A burn of 30% of total body area can cost as much as $200,000 in initial hospitalization and physician’s fees. For extensive burns, there are significant additional costs. The cost of burn related deaths and injuries among children ages 4 and under account for more than $4.1 billion annually. Initial hospitalization can be followed by years of reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation. With severe burns, these children may be left permanently disabled or disfigured. Burns are also among the most painful and devastating injuries a child can go through.

Put into use in the fire service, this device can, and will, save an infant or small child from severe burns or death.

That is our goal, and our motivation.
